7th Kuma International Summer School

This past July 22-30, 2024, we hosted the 7th edition of the Kuma International Summer School, bringing together 28 participants from across Europe, including Ukraine, Palestine, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, to explore the role of contemporary art in addressing conflict and trauma. Since 2018, more than 150 participants from 30 countries have joined us, engaging with post-conflict societies through the lens of visual arts, with a special focus on Bosnia and Herzegovina and the work of artists from the region and its diaspora.

A Journey Across Bosnia

This year program began with five days in Sarajevo at the Kuma headquarter, where participants attended lectures, workshops, and discussions led by a diverse group of guest lecturers. Afterward, the group traveled to Goražde, in Eastern Bosnia, for two days of reflection and exploration.

Our time in Goražde started with swimming in the Drina River and getting acquainted with the city. The second day took us to Ruda Glava, where we stayed at the Nedim Pilav Jogi cabin. Guided by Mr. Romi, an experienced mountaineer, local tour guide, and survivor of the siege of Goražde, participants explored former war trenches and listened to his powerful stories of people crossing the mountains during the war to find food and resources. This experience offered participants a profound insight into the resilience and courage of those affected by conflict.

A Collaborative Effort

This edition was made possible thanks to the support of the Kreisau-Initiative and the Erasmus+ program, which provided travel reimbursement for participants from the EU and neighboring countries. Participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina were eligible for full scholarships upon request.

We extend special thanks to Kerim Somun from the Kreisau-Initiative in Berlin for his unwavering support and dedication, as well as to Amina Hećimović for her incredible social media coverage throughout the event!

Looking Back and Moving Forward

The 7th edition of the Kuma International Summer School was an inspiring journey of learning, reflection, and connection. From the engaging sessions in Sarajevo to the reflective moments in Goražde, the program provided a unique space to explore how art and culture can foster resilience and healing in post-conflict societies.

We are deeply grateful to everyone—participants, lecturers, and partners—who contributed to the success of this edition. As we reflect on this journey, we look forward to continuing our mission of fostering creativity, education, and cross-cultural dialogue through future programs.
