    Hella Wiedmer-Newman

Hella holds an MA in Art History from University College London and a BA in Art History and Geography from the University of Toronto. Hella previously interned at Hauser & Wirth Gallery Zurich and at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. Before the pandemic, Hella volunteered with a refugee aid organization in Sarajevo where she discovered not only the tensions in BiH’s border and asylum politics, but also the city’s rich artistic and memorial culture. She became aware of Kuma International through their online Artists in Conversation series and was invited to attend the Kuma Summer School in 2021.

She started interning at Kuma International while working on her thesis titled “Beyond the Breach: New Memory in Bosnia and Herzegovina.” It focused on the way memorial museums in Sarajevo exhibit and archive contemporary art works to mobilize the artifacts in their collections, thereby forging a new kind of collective memory. She also works as a freelance translator and editor, with a focus on texts about art and culture. She is currently applying to doctoral programs in Art History and Visual Culture.

During her internship, she has had the opportunity to serve as guest editor of the third issue of Mahala Magazine.
