Mahala Magazine is a new editorial project dedicated to documentary photography. It was born in Sarajevo in February 2021 after a two-week workshop on photojournalism with Italian photojournalist Enrico Dagnino.
A team of dedicated emerging professionals and photography students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, and the United States created seven photo stories about Sarajevo with disposable analog cameras.
Mahala Magazine’s first issue was distributed in the best coffee places, bookstores and design shops in Sarajevo, and was received with great enthusiasm (free download). We continued implementing our editorial project and published the second issue in July 2021 (free download).
The third issue of Mahala Magazine was released in December 2021. It was distributed in the best coffee places and design stores around Sarajevo. For this third issue, we decided to expand its concept and explore other mahalas around the country. It was the beginning of a new adventure where our photographers and journalists explored other cities, realities and exciting stories. Mahala’s third issue is also available as a free download.
Mahala aims to be a welcoming publication filled with great stories about the people living in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The magazine wants to be a mirror of all of the values that Kuma International supports, such as interethnic dialogue, civil society engagement, and democratic participation, while at the same time promoting a positive image of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
As the editor-in-chief, Enrico Dagnino, says, “We live in an era of confusion and fake news in a digital universe. It is more important than ever to remain honest and impartial. The newly born Mahala Magazine is our answer to the actual confusion. Our commitment is to portray life as we see it without staging or manipulating anything, to understand and change the society in which we live for the better.”
