    REMEMORY 1992-2022

An exhibition exploring the role of memory, remembrance and contemporary forms of memorialization 30 years after the beginning of the Bosnian war, opening at Brodac Gallery on March 4 2022 at 7.

Last fall in Sarajevo, together with our partner Brodac Gallery, we organized a series of six workshops with local and international artists and photographers on the theme of memory, remembrance and contemporary forms of memorialization.

Artists Ziyah Gafić, Smirna Kulenović, Enrico Dagnino, Mak Hubjer, Velibor Božović and Aida Šehović worked towards posing and answering a number of questions about the nature and varieties of memory, such as: how do we remember the past and what is the role of art and photography in that process?

The exhibition will display works by the six artists along with some of the workshops participants: Irma Bajramović, Anela Dumonjić, Nora Köhler, Michael Pribich and Bedrija Šahbaz.

The initiative was organized as part of the project “Rememory 1992-2022: 30 years of remembrance through art in Bosnia and Herzegovina” organized together with our partner Brodac Gallery, with the generous support of the International Relief Fund for Organisations in Culture and Education 2021 of the German Federal Foreign Office, the Goethe-Institut and other partners.

Commemorating 30th anniversary since the beginning of the Bosnian War, this project focuses on stories from Sarajevo and Goražde and involves activists and artists in order to offer a highly local context-sensitive perspective on the consequences of the past – and the remembrance thereof. The project is designed to offer all participants in-depth knowledge on the notions of divisions, contested spaces, times and fluidity of borders and to empower the participants to reflect on the role of the arts and culture in social transformation. The main objective of the project is to be able to unfold the past for a healthy and inclusive future in BiH in order to foster a more unified and coherent way forward. Our participants will be offered unique learning from the past experience while simultaneously being empowered and encouraged to create active, engaging and responsible changes within their community.
