It has been our pleasure to welcome Italian photographer Camilla de Maffei at Kuma Residency as she began a new long-term project in Bosnia and Herzegovina in collaboration with journalist Christian Elia (@chrelia ) in 2024.
Thanks to the support of Strategia Fotografia 2024, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture, Camilla will dedicate much of 2025 to continuing this investigation.
Thirty years after the Dayton Agreement, their project explores the causes and consequences of the massive depopulation reshaping Bosnia and Herzegovina. After a year of research, Camilla and Christian highlight that the emptiness spreading across rural areas and many cities is not just physical—it carries profound symbolic and political weight, raising essential questions about the contradictions of European policies.
At Kuma Residency, we deeply valued the opportunity to support and witness Camilla’s journey across Bosnia, capturing the country through her lens. Her photographs not only document but also reveal deep, untold stories, bringing a powerful visual narrative to this complex and evolving reality.
This project is made possible through a collaboration with international partners, including:
