    KUMA INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL

    ART IN TIMES OF CRISIS

    and

    WARM ACADEMY

TELLING THE STORY IN TIMES OF CRISIS

    Sarajevo, 10-15 August 2020

The third edition of Kuma International Summer School was held in Sarajevo together with the WARM Academy, a multidisciplinary, multimedia, educational, and training program implemented by the WARM Foundation in 2019, at its second edition this year.

This year’s edition was a smaller-scale event with reduced numbers of guests and participants that implemented strict health and hygiene measures to protect the safety of everyone involved in accordance with all the epidemiological requirements and measures related to COVID-19.

The event took place 25 years after the genocide in Srebrenica and the end of the Bosnian War in 1995 – a grim anniversary that holds significance for many of the region’s artists and cultural workers. The program provided a glimpse into the impact of the recent past as well as the current state of social and political affairs on local aesthetics and visual narratives, at the same time focusing on the role of reporters in times of crisis.

While the school focused on the cultural significance of the end of the Bosnian War and its long-lasting consequences, it also touched on the role of art in the present time of collective vulnerability, worsened by the ongoing worldwide health crisis. This year’s program examined artistic practices that address issues of fear, isolation, and loss as it searches for an answer to the question: “What is the role of the arts in times of crisis?”

The six-day course was a visual journey through the country’s recent past, from 1992 to the end of the war in 1995 and up to today. It addressed questions of aesthetics in the aftermath of violence, while also exploring memory, the idea of belonging, and the ongoing quest for identity. Participants were challenged and inspired by some of the region’s most renowned artists, who demonstrated the ways they’ve used their work to address the political turmoil then and now. Guests from the WARM Academy featured a series of masterclasses and interactive panel discussion that present cutting-edge approaches, innovative techniques and best practices being utilized across the globe to address issues related to contemporary conflict and post-conflict transitions.

The event was realized with the generous support of Open Society Fund BiH, VII Academy and ForumZFD.
